10/23 – 5:00 PM Girls Soccer Final Chatham 1 West Morris 0
With her hands on her hips, the talented midfielder took a second to catch her breath, knowing this could be the final play of the night. Droner had just drawn a foul and was looking at a free kick from 35 yards out that could cap off what might be the greatest game in program history.
The clock ticked under a minute to go in overtime as Droner settled herself and Chatham coach Gary Adair had just three words of advance: Hit the target. It was a simple message, but it resonated.
Droner embraced the moment, took four steps, planted and let it rip.
The ball flew perfectly through the night sky and dropped just under the bar.
It was the only goal Chatham needed to upset West Morris in extra time and win its first-ever Morris County championship. It’s a shot that will live on forever at Chatham.
“I knew it would be our last opportunity when I drew the foul,” said Droner. “I took a deep breath, focused on hitting the target, and just watched it go in. This just shows that we wanted it so bad. We put everything we had into this game and we deserved to win.”
